EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres

The BCS DCSG have been involved with the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres since early 2008. Towards the end of 2008 the DCSG committee secretary (Liam Newcombe) was asked to chair the Best Practice working group on behalf of the EC-JRC (European Commission Joint Research Centre).

Liam managed the process of agreeing the best practice guide along with the associated process and documentation. The Best Practice working group  continuously reviews data centre best practices and updates the wider stakeholders  group at the annual review meeting held at the European Commission Joint Research Centre site in Ispra, Italy.

The DCSG maintains an on-line forum and as well as a LinkedIn discussion group for input and contribution to the code's best practices. Both members and non-members are welcome to contribute to either.

Quote from Best Practice working group chairman - Liam Newcombe at the launch of the Code in November 2008.

The process of negotiating the final list of best practices was not an easy one. Stakeholders from all corners of the industry (and global) provided feedback and active participation. However I feel the group was able to settle on a base set of best practices that are relevant to all sizes and types of data centres."

Every year in November on the anniversary of the code the proposed updates to the best practices are presented at a public event. Should you wish to feedback or comment on the best practice guide please contact Liam at any point in advance of the September review. You may use the contact form to reach him with your suggestions or use the site forums or alternatively the LinkedIn group that has been setup for public discussion.
