Welcome to the BCS Data Centre Specialist Group website. The Data Centre Specialist Group (DCSG) is a voluntary membership group within the British Computer Society (BCS). We are now into our second year with over 180 members representing data centre owners and operators both within and outside the UK. During our inaugral year (2007) the DCSG rapidly became a significant voice within the data centre industry due to the breadth and depth of knowledge within our membership as well as our independant status under the BCS and its royal charter. The DCSG has also become a significant voice in the sustainable IT debate with its research in data centre energy efficiency. Members of the DCSG can participate in our working groups by either logging onto our site and entering the forums section or attending one of our events and participating in person. Members also have access to additional presentations (and speakers notes), pre-release white-papers and documents stored in our on-line web repository. Joining information can be found by clicking "Join the DCSG" on the menu if you are not already a DCSG member.

On Wednesday the 7th May the DCSG took part in a Grid Computing Now web seminar which you can view here. This event focussed on energy and cost both within the data centre and at the desktop. The first presentation by Nic Barnes presented the practical experience and measurement data from Merrill Lynch in server and desktop virtualisation. The presentation provides a very interesting practical perspective on the real world cost and energy benefits of thin clients and 'desktop virtualisation', what the factors are and what consolidation ratios you need to achieve to break even on cost and carbon. The work done by Nic and his team at Merrill Lynch is impressive as they have taken considerable trouble both to collect quantitative data and to understand the delivery financial and environmental costs of their services to the business. The second presentation by the DCSG Secretary examines whether we are asking the wrong questions about energy use in ICT and presents the argument for per service accounting and targeting the user demand in place of the IT and data centre operators. We then explore some of the complexities in data centre energy use and accounting and provides some example analysis from the DCSG model of financial and energy cost of IT systems comparing different deployment options. |

The DCSG are running a review and working group meeting for its members on the 27th May (6pm -9pm) on the draft EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres. This event has been specifically organised for our members to get an indepth update on the current draft document and then via the working groups during the second half of the evening, provide direct feedback and input into the best practice workstream. The DCSG Secretary, Liam Newcombe, now leads the EU CoC for Data Centres Best Practice working group so this event is a great chance to have your points considered before the final Code of Conduct is released later this year. Please see our event calendar for registration details. |
